Summer is finally here! How do I know this? Because I fulfilled a lifelong summer tradition . . . eating a warm cucumber straight from the vine! My humble garden boasts 2 varieties of heirloom cukes this year. Straight 8 and Boothby’s Blonde. Yesterday I realized that under the unruly vines, I had cucumbers that were much larger than I had thought! I found one that fit into the recommended 3″-5″ range and I picked it immediately while doing a happy dance. Passing neighbors probably thought I had been stung by a bee. Anyway, I was nice enough to share with the kids. We all agreed that it was one of the best cukes we had ever tasted. Then again, the first one of the season always is!
So far, there are tons of Boothby’s Blondes that will be ready to be picked in the next week. The Straight 8s are *maybe* an inch long, but they look like they are doing well too! Hooray for the first cucumber of summer!
