It’s time to talk about the corn we harvested this summer! The whole family got involved for a weekend of picking, pulling stalks, shucking, washing, cutting, cooking, freezing and corny jokes!

Friend, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears! (Get it?) |
Of course we didn’t want to waste those corn stalks. We had no idea just how many corn stalks it would be! We started out trying to haul them in a wagon. Then we brought in the big guns…

This truck is a bit of a stalker. |
We hauled the stalks around to the barn to be dried for use as goat fodder this winter.
|
When daddy is unloading the truck is it POP-CORN? |
|
Don’t tell secrets in the garden. The cornstalk! (Get it? Oh, nevermind!) |
|
I bet there’s lots of “cob” webs in this barn! |
After that little chore was done, we began processing corn. Our very prettiest ears were kept for fresh eating. The other nice ones were shucked, blanched and frozen. For the more unfortunate looking ears, we cut the kernels from the cobs, and made creamed corn for the freezer. It was so tasty! We made sure to label the variety of corn, so that over the course of the year we can evaluate whether we prefer the hybrid Silver Queen or the heirloom Stowell’s Evergreen. I’m sure you will be ALL EARS for the verdict! You are? Awwww, shucks!
