DIY Darth Vader Lamp

Every once in awhile I have a super crafty idea!  This was one of those times!  My son wanted Star Wars decorations in his room and he needed a new lamp to replace his outdated wobbly one.  I went to the store to price a Star Wars lamp.  The prices were more frightening than having my arms ripped off by a wookie!  I think what I came up with instead turned out to be a pretty good alternative!

First of all, I had to do to fix the wobbly lamp.  All I had to do was to remove the fabric on the bottom of the lamp and reach inside to tighten the nut inside.  It took less than 30 seconds and it was completely solid again.  It was, however, still pretty outdated.  That is when I broke out my trusty spray paint and gave both the lamp and the shade a couple of coats of black.

After that dried, I looked up the “computer” on Darth’s chest online.  There were A LOT of versions of it.  I picked a simple version and sketched it onto the lamp base.  Then I just filled it in with acrylic paints.  It took me 2 coats to get it good and covered.

Now, I believe this is a simple DIY lamp, but if there is a hard part, this is it.  You need to get the face right.  I looked at a picture on the computer and just free handed the face with acrylic paints and a small paint brush.  If I had it to do over again, I would make that special trip to the store for a white paint pen.  I think that would have made it easier.

If you are nervous about doing the face, don’t be!  All you really need to do is find a good picture on the internet and print it onto a full sheet of paper.  Rub chalk on the back of the paper and then tape it to the lamp.  Use a pencil or ball-point pen to trace the lines.  Remove the paper and you have guidelines for your painting!  Just fill in with a paint pen and you are all set.  In fact, they will probably look better than the one I did!  If you have any chalk marks leftover, just let the shade dry completely (overnight or more) and wipe it down with a damp cloth.  It should come right off!

If you make this Darth Vader lamp, or any other Star Wars inspired lamps, please let me know how they turn out!
