Eggs and Bones

Well, today was certainly a day for finding things here at Green Eggs and Goats!  We have had a little trouble lately with our ducks and chickens hiding eggs from us lately, and apparently, today was the day to find them!  For some reason, Eric is always much better at finding duck eggs than I am.  Try as we might, they just don’t want to lay in the coop or the barn.  They much prefer to lay in the bushes, the compost, the bank of the pond or even in the pond itself!  Pretty much anywhere other than the barn or the coop.  Well I had found a grand total of one duck egg all week, so Eric went down, and found 2 in the pond (not unusual) and a clutch of 6 on the bank.  Hooray for duck eggs!  I just love them and they are supposed to be better nutritionally than chicken eggs.

Speaking of chicken eggs.  We had been getting blue eggs in the coop quite regularly from a grey Ameraucana hen.  (Another leaves them under the stairs, but at least we know to look there!)  Well, suddenly this week, the blue eggs disappeared.  She is a new layer, so it didn’t make sense for her to just stop laying altogether.  I have looked for hidden eggs nearly everyday this week, but I didn’t find any, so I blamed the switch on the lack of daylight hours.

This afternoon, I walked near the wall of the barn in order to reach for a flashlight that Eric was trying to hand me, and there they were.  9 beautiful blue eggs, artfully hidden under the grass seed spreader.

Can you find the 9th egg?  It’s hiding!

So, now for the grizzly discovery for the day.  We had been chatting with a neighbor, and when we finished, we began walking back through the pasture toward the house.  All of a sudden something caught my eye.  It was a leg.  Eric immediately said “It’s a deer leg,”  but everything about it said goat to me at that moment. My head popped up and I began counting goats.  Molly, Tesla, Jake, Chip…  Where was Daisy?!?  I couldn’t see her.  Please, oh please, don’t let it be daisy!  A mild heart attack ensued.  Then, of course, Daisy walked out from behind the barn.  It was a deer leg after all.

Lately, we have been seeing the worst things on the side of the road.  We have tons of hunters in our area and a large deer population.  Hunters are killing deer, taking what they want of the meat, and leaving the carcass laying by the road.  It is a horrible sight, and don’t even get me started on how it disrespects the animal.  I’m not opposed to hunting at all, but the laziness of just leaving what you don’t want on the side of the road is ridiculous.   Apparently a dog brought this little prize into our pasture to enjoy and left the remains.  Now, aren’t you glad I didn’t include a picture of that little discovery?

OK, I’m back off my soapbox now.  I suddenly have tons of eggs to eat, as I had more than a dozen in the house before we discovered 2 clutches today.  I have been making delicious duck egg quiches about once a week, but I feel like I’m getting into a rut, so what are your favorite egg recipes?

  1. Yes, thanks for not showing the bone! I can’t believe hunters would just leave the carcass on the side of the road. I’m with you – very disrespectful. I believe in ethical hunting!

Our chickens like to lay in strange places, too. Last week I found 13 eggs hidden under a stack of chairs. And our Easter Egger used to lay on top of the chick brooder, but we haven’t found her eggs for a couple weeks now. She is young, so I know she’s laying…we just don’t know where!

Found your blog from the Backyard Farming Connection 🙂

  2. We’ve had a lot of carcasses alongside the road lately too. Here though it’s mostly just deer playing chicken with cars and losing. It is interesting, in a macabre sort of way, to see how the carcasses devolve from day to day as the carrion eaters work their magic. Buzzards need to eat too, and I am happy to have their cleaning services available, even if their leavings look like a 50’s western set.

Hunting season is also the season when the dog gets frequent baths for she does love to smear herself all over with stinking dead things. Why do we keep animals again?
