Yum! A quart of sour cream! |
Thick enough to stick to a chip, and it tastes just like sour cream!! |
I know that you can make it from store bought sour cream, but I had purchased a package of Sour Cream Starter from cheesemaking.com with a recent order, so I decided to give it a shot. It really couldn’t be easier. These are the directions on the website:
“DIRECTIONS: Heat 1qt. pasteurized light cream or 1/2 & 1/2 to 86ºF. Add and mix in 1 packet. Let set at room temperature, undisturbed, for 12 hours or until thickened to desired consistency.”
So, I literally scooped cream off the top of my milk until I had 2 cups. Then I added 2 cups of whole milk. I heated the mixture to a whopping 86 degrees, added a packet of starter, stirred well, poured it in a clean Mason Jar put a lid on, and stuck it into the cabinet next to my stove for about a day. When I remembered it again, it was thick, delicious sour cream! I plan to use it to make a Sour Cream Pound Cake later in the week. Yum!
P.S. The people at Cheesemaking.com have no idea who I am, and did not ask me to post this, nor do I make any money if you shop at their site. I just like it, so I thought you would too!

This is my first visit and love what I see! Following you now!
How neat! I know what you mean about being surprised when a recipe turns out well. Sometimes I think “oh, this isn’t going to work” but follow the directions anyway, and it turns out great! Congrats on your successful sour cream 🙂
Homemade sour cream? Sounds wonderful! Thanks for the tip.

Yay! Sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing on Wildcrafting Wednesday! 🙂
I’ve been making yogurt, and OH MY it is delicious! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
So you could use regular sour cream as a starter? I’ve always tried to make it by leaving raw cream alone at room temp. It tastes more like blue cheese to me.
I make yogurt and kefir but have not tried sour cream. Thanks for the encouragement.
And congratulations on your featured post at Wildcrafting Wednesday.
Congrats on being featured on Wildcrafting Wednesday! Great post 🙂 I’ve been learning to make yummy things from raw milk and this sounds like a great project!
Oooohhh I’m a customer of theirs, and I’m ordering some sour cream starter right now… looks so very easy!
