30,000 New Farm Workers?

Yep, you read that one right.  30,000 (give or take) new hard workers have taken up residence here at Green Eggs & Goats!

How is that possible?  Well, the workers are tiny, and they pack a punch, but hopefully, they will provide us with the absolute most local honey imaginable!

Meet the bees!

Hive 1 is located right in my square foot gardening area.  It is so fun to watch them coming and going while I work in the garden.  This is the stronger of our hives

Hive 2 is located near our new “orchard” area and near the location of our row gardens.  This was the weaker hive, but it is trying hard to catch up with the other one!

Noccalula Falls, Gadsden, AL
OK, this is unrelated, except that we visited this awesome waterfall on the way to pick up the bee packages!

We have also added a third package of bees to a top bar hive that we built ourselves.  We are very excited to be able to compare the two types of hives and decide which we prefer.  I would include a picture here, but I’ll be honest.  The roof (my contribution to the project) looks just terrible.  I really want to cover it with license plates, but I don’t have enough yet, so I used roof flashing, and i did not do a good job of installing it at all.  I’ll post a pic as soon as I’m not embarrassed about it!

I have to say that I am really, really enjoying working with the bees so far.  Eric and I have received one sting each, which isn’t too bad, and as he says, beekeeping has just enough of a fear factor to make it interesting!  We have both been into the hives several times without our bee suits without too much trouble.  You can tell the attitude of the whole hive as soon as you begin to open it up.  They are usually docile, but if they aren’t you still have time to go get your suit on!

  1. This is so interesting… our neighbor has bees, but I have never been “up close and personal” with his hives. I see a lot of them in our garden, though, and I’m very grateful!

  2. How neat! We are getting into beekeeping for the first time this year, and are going to pick up our bees here in the next week. I’m really excited! Last week we got to visit the hives of a fellow member of the local beekeeping club and it was so cool. She opened her hives to show us a few things and gave us some good tips. We had never been around a bee hive before, so it made us feel better and a lot more confident.
