We are still extreme novices when it comes to beekeeping, so I won’t bother trying to offer bad advice to you just yet, but I know that most people have never actually seen the inside of a hive, so I thought you might enjoy a peek inside our hives.
We have two Langstroth hives, and one top bar hive. It is just fascinating to watch the difference between the two!
Bees building comb on the bars of the Top Bar Hive |
A better look. There are so many bees you can’t really see the comb, so you’ll just have to trust me that it’s there! |
Take a look at the queen bee in one of the Langstroth hives! Notice how much bigger she is than the other bees! |
I really wanted to get a picture of the capped honey in the other hive, but, well, I got stung by a bee and it hurt like H – E – double hockey sticks, so I forgot all about the camera. Just for the record, getting stung through jeans hurts a lot more than just getting stung. Until I was able to get the stinger out, the barb rocked back and forth with every move I made. Yikes!
So what about you? Have you ever done any beekeeping?
So neat to see the bees on the top bar hive! We just have one Langstroth hive right now but hope to add more in the future. I haven’t been stung yet and I’m kind of scared of how I will react when I eventually do get stung!
I’ve been stung once on the head (not too bad, but cussing did occur) and through the jeans, which stunk. They were dark jeans though, I probably shouldn’t have been wearing them out there. We are finding the hives to be more aggressive now that they are beginning to make honey than they were at first.
Good luck (and keep some Benadryl on hand!)
Heavy jeans are a must. Like, double front carhartt. 🙂
I will look into those, thanks!
I am still kind of sensitive to getting stung and still wear gloves despite having been stung many times through the years. My bees are spoiled rotten and I get stung fiddling and feeding them frequently. Getting stung is just part of our obsession with these amazing creatures. They have traits and dedication that majority of humans do not have. Amazing to watch colonies grow and divide into more and more. Hope you have a great summer. John, a city beekeeper.
