I would like to report that I have found that my gutter gardens have developed a major pest problem.
Gutter Garden “Before” |
At first, I wasn’t sure what was eating the greens. I thought maybe I had a grasshopper. For some reason, only the greens from the bottom two rows were disappearing. Chipmunk? They would likely eat the top row too though.
Gutter Garden “After” |
And then one day, I happened past the back door and I heard little voices out playing on the deck. That’s not unusual, of course, except that they were talking about the snack they were enjoying.
Pest Mystery Solved.
At least they were eating their greens! It gives a whole new meaning to the term “salad bar.”
What a wonderful way for lettuce to disappear! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
I agree! None better!
how funny:)
I love this story!! I used to be the mystery greens thief in my grandma`s garden too! It`s memories like this that made my visits to her house so special.
What do you think about gutter strawberries? Having a 2nd row for the runners.
I’ve heard of people using it for strawberries, but I would worry about them drying out. If your lettuce dries out, that is a bummer, but you can plant more and harvest in a month or so. If your perennial strawberries dry out, that’s sad. Of course that’s just my 2 cents worth. If you are excellent at remembering to water, it would probably do great!
