Dent Corn!

My last post was admittedly a bit very whiny in regards to my garden this year, so I though I would share with you something that did do well this year today to make up for it!

A Big, Beautiful Bowl of Dent Corn!

In addition to my square foot garden, which is usually my pride and joy, I also have a moderately sized row garden that is slightly uphill from the raised bed.  I mention the location to say that, while it has endured just as much rain, at least the rows were able to drain!  In the row garden, you can find my okra, drying beans, edamame, and corn.  This year I planted 4 varieties of corn:

  1. Silver Queen – Always a winner when it comes to sweet corn!
  2. Early Sunglow – This “early” sweet corn was a total flop this year.  It wasn’t any earlier either!
  3. Dynamite Popcorn – This did well.  I planted it in a “flower bed” in the back yard.  I’m sure I’ll post about it later.
  4. Daymon Morgan’s Kentucky Dent Corn – some of the most beautiful corn I’ve ever seen!
I love that each ear was different!

This is my first foray into the world of dent corn, but I have to say, I hope it isn’t my last!  When we harvested the corn, we decided to shuck it right there in the field.  Beulah and the goats were on the other side of the fence happily munching as we tossed our corn husks and stalks sloppily over.  With each new ear, they kids would exclaim loudly what color the corn was and whether it was streaked like a bloodshot eyeball.  (Trust me, with 3 kids under 10, corn that looks like an eyeball is a huge thing!)

See the Eyeball Effect in the center ear?
This was a total hit with the kids!

We had to go ahead and harvest it a little earlier than planned because I was afraid it would begin to mold with all the rain we have had, so we just set it our to dry with a fan on it, and we’re popping the kernels off the ears as we are able.

Our next step is to grind the corn for making cornmeal and grits.  I’ve never ground my own flours before, so I will need some new equipment to make that happen.  I was thinking about getting the “dry goods” container for my Vitamix vs. buying a grinder.  I have found them as low as $30 online, but those have terrible reviews.

So, my question of the day is, do have a recommendation for a grinder that can handle corn?  If so, let me have it!

  1. Our NutriMill does a great job with corn (and other grains) – my GF corn bread rarely makes it to the next day. (Found you from Small Footprint Fridays).
