No, I’m not sneaking up on them and yanking them out. These are just feathers that fall out naturally. Just like we lose hair in our hairbrush, they are constantly losing and re-growing feathers. During their “molt” (which we are thankfully coming out of now) some chickens lose so many they look indecently naked running around the yard!
Anyway, the kids call them “Heather’s Feathers” and they help me pick up the pretty ones. At first I filled vases with them. Then I filled baggies, intending to one day sell them on Etsy or in a craft show. Now they have taken over my craft table.
The feathers have gotten a little out of hand. Don’t Judge. |
So what’s a girl to do? Well look up feather crafts on Pinterest, that’s what! So now I have every manner of feather crafts pinned on my “Feeling Crafty” board, and I’m just waiting on my first round of FloraCraft Styrofoam Balls 12-Pack: 2″ White to show up later today so that I can start off making some feathered Christmas ornaments. I also plan to blow out some eggs and make some ornaments out of those too.
Check out the styrofoam ornaments I am going to try out first!
So, does anyone have any feather crafts you are just dying to tell me about? I certainly have the raw materials! I’m thinking feathered flip flops for next summer!
I have a feather obsession too! I have a 40 gal tote almost full!
I’m so glad I’m not alone!! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
i love this i have been trying to think of something to do with all my chicken feather
I am recently obsessed with feathers as well. I just moved to AZ and dream catchers are everywhere so I decided to make a not so typical dream catcher of my own with the feathers I’ve collected since being here. Super easy to do and I love the final product!

It’s beautiful! Thanks for sharing!!
Well, you are speaking my mind. My daughter and I can’t help picking up feathers whenever we go outside, we just can’t help ourselves. What’s 2 girls supposed to do with all these beautiful feathers? We made feather hair strings today – they turned out pretty cute 🙂
