A few weeks ago, I shared about how I was looking for crafts to do with all these feathers that I can’t stop picking up around the yard. Well, I’ve been hard at work, so I want to start sharing some of my successes with you! First up, this is an easy project that would make a great Christmas gift for a friend, family member, or teacher!
I didn’t photograph a full tutorial because these guinea feather coasters are literally so easy! I did find that they work best with the smaller “whispy” feathers than with ones that are more ridid. The lighter ones just stuck better for me.
- Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to a 4×4 ceremic tile. I found that a Foam Brush worked really well for this.
- Gently stick the feather onto the wet glue and position it just the way you want.
- Now, very carefully brush a coat of Mod Podge onto the top of the feather to get it completely stuck down.
- Let it dry and apply another coat of Mod Podge over the whole thing. I aim for 3 coats of Mod Podge total. Don’t worry, it doesn’t take that long to dry.
- Now take the coasters outside and give them 2 coats of Acrylic Coating Aerosol Spray. Again, this doesn’t take long to dry, but it helps your coaster not be sticky when you set something on top of them later. It also seals and protects the feather from water damage.
- Finally, cut a square of felt just a small bit smaller than your tile, and glue it to the back of the coaster as a cushion. (I used Aleene’s Tacky Glue for this)
- As soon as it dries, you are all done!
Easy peasy, right? I am picturing giving away sets of these tied up with ribbon as a great, inexpensive gift! Keep in mind that you can also dye the feathers first with kool-aid or Rit dye for an even more custom look! Happy crafting!
Do you make homemade Christmas presents? Have you started yet for this year?
P.S. If you need inspiration, I have lots of great crafts (including feather crafts) on my Pinterest board, “Feelin’ Crafty,” why not check it out?
Happily shared on Small Footprint Fridays, Fellowship Fridays, Rural Wisdom and Know How, Handmade Christmas 2013 and on the From the Farm Blog Hop!
This is a really cute idea! I’ve been collecting so many feathers lately, too. When I see them on the ground I just can’t pass them by!
I know, right? You just know you could do something with them!
I, too, have a stash of feathers from our chickens and LOVE this idea! Thank you very much! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
You’re welcome! I will hopefully be posting more feather crafts before these things take over my house! 🙂
