Irish Wheaten Bread with Jam and Butter

Irish Wheaten Bread Recipe

This is absolutely one of my favorite things to eat in Ireland!  Irish wheaten bread is simple, delicious and easy to make.  Finding a recipe with measurements in cups and ounces, however, can be difficult!  So, with St. Patrick’s Day rapidly approaching (and because we have already established that the Irish don’t eat corned beef and cabbageI want to share my recipe for Irish wheaten bread.

Irish Wheaten Bread with Jam and Butter

Irish Wheaten Bread

Wheaten is a soda bread, so no worries for the bread-making novices out there, there is no yeast for you to worry about here!  I prefer it spread with butter and topped with a slice of Irish cheese (Kerrygold cheese is the easiest to find stateside), but butter and honey are very nice too!  It is also great dipped into a nice hot bowl of beef stew.  YUM!  I’m making myself hungry just thinking about it!  This was also something we would easily pack up for a picnic along with butter, cheese, salad and a thermos of hot tea! *affiliate link*

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp butter
  • 1¾ cup buttermilk
Instructions
  1. Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.
  2. Add butter and cut it into the dry ingredients with a fork or pastry cutter until well combined
  3. Slowly add the buttermilk until a nice dough forms (it might not require all of it!)
  4. Knead a few times and shape into a nice bread round.
  5. With a sharp knife, cut an X across the top about half an inch deep.
  6. Now bake in a 350° oven for about 45 minutes.
  7. When the bread is done, it will have a nice brown color, sound hollow when tapped, and if you insert a skewer into it, it will come out clean.
  8. Let cool on a wire rack if you are able to resist.
Notes
Enjoy with butter, cheese, honey or just dunked in a nice bowl of soup.
