Yum. Cornbread.
Cornbread is a staple in the South. It can be served with your savory dinner or spread with butter and preserves and eaten for dessert. It is also quick and easy to make it yourself with real, healthy ingredients! I hope you enjoy my honey whole wheat cornbread as much as we do!

Cook time
Total time
Delicious, healthy cornbread made with only "real food" ingredients!
Ingredients
- ½ cup whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1½ cups cornmeal
- 3 tbsp honey
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
- ¼ cup bacon grease or other oil - coconut, olive oil, whatever you have
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450°
- Mix all ingredients except for the bacon grease (or oil)
- Add your grease directly to your cast iron skillet and place in the hot oven for several minutes until is is melted and hot.
- Carefully remove the skillet from the oven and dump your cornbread batter directly on top of the oil. This will give you nice crunchy cornbread.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Notes
If you intend to make muffins, or just don't have a cast iron skillet to bake in, no worries! Simply mix your liquid oil into your batter and proceed. It works just fine that way as well!
