A Tour of My Garden!

My garden makes me unnaturally happy!  I thought I would give you a look around, but be warned, it is in dire need of weeding, the grass needs cutting, and I am transitioning from summer to fall veggies.  In other words, it’s looked better.  Don’t judge.

Just looking at my garden makes me feel calmer.  Eric wanted me to have the garden of my dreams, so we splurged a little on the fence.  I just love how it looks.  It reminds me of “grandma’s garden” at the Birmingham Zoo.

It does still need a bit of work though.  We bought a nice latch for it, but it didn’t fit right, so we came up with a very high-tech solution.

Hey, it keeps the goats out anyway!

Come on in!

I should probably start by saying that I am a huge fan of Square Foot Gardening!

I will go into more detail in a later post, but just for reference, these beds are 12’x4′ and are divided into 48 squares each.  They are also purple.

Those who know me are well aware that

A. purple is my favorite color and

B. I really, really love to spray paint.  I just couldn’t resist painting my garden beds!

Please note, that only the outside and top edges are painted.  We don’t need paint chemicals leeching into our organic veggies, now do we?

Pay no attention to the giant ant bed in the corner!

Growing Watermelons in a Square Foot Garden
2 Rogue Watermelons are still trying to grow.  I don’t have the heart to tell them it’s fall!

My okra is still going strong, but it feels very wrong to wear a sweatshirt while picking it!

Herbs in a Square Foot Garden Bed
This bed has mostly herbs and peppers.  I *may* have gone overboard planing banana peppers this year!

Strawberry beds are constructed of bricks we found laying around the property!

Well, as you can see, it needs a little work.  Unfortunately, our push mower died a few months ago and we have been having to “mow” with the weedeater.  Of course, by “we” I mean that Eric has been doing it for me.

Apparently I have many good qualities, but weed-eating isn’t one of them.  It is a 2 person job anyway, because one person runs the machine while the other picks up vines, trailing plants and other things that don’t need to get obliterated.  Hopefully, we will get a new mower this spring and the chore will be much easier!

Stay tuned for a list of great veggies to plant in the fall.  Be prepared for me to talk about kale!  Alot.
