$10 Christmas Challenge: My Progress

Hello!  The last two times I talked about our $10 Christmas Challenge, I showed you my craft room and my thrift store finds.  Saturday two worlds collided!  Eric and the kids were off watching football all day, so I spent the entire day sewing, thrift store shopping, and blaring Christmas music!  It was wonderful!  I got a lot of presents finished and more started!  In an effort to get to bed at a decent hour, I am going to post a few of my projects tonight and more later.

I actually had a slow start to the day.  I was trying to use the patterns I had and make them fit with my ideas and my mismatched fabric stashes.  It just wasn’t working.  Instead, I hopped online for some inspiration and then I just started sewing.  Apparently I do much better when I think outside the pattern and just create something!  Also, I was on a total apron kick, so I hope everyone on my gift list likes aprons.  A lot.

The Super Funky Apron

I made 2 of these aprons for my girls.  One is a little longer than the other.  The orange fabric is a fat quarter that I have had in my stash for years, and the zebra came from the thrift store sheet that I scored the other week.

Cute Country Apron with Pocket
I just love this one!  The main fabric was a thrift store bedskirt that I paid $1.69 for.  It is the red picnic check with green border.  It was even gathered already!!  I just hemmed the sides and added the waistband and pocket.  The denim fabric came from an old pillow case that my mom gave me.  When I cleaned out my linen closet recently, I moved this to the fabric box because it didn’t match anything I owned.  I found the pillow case very easy to work with.  I also found some ric-rac in my sewing box.  I used it to embellish the pocket, and it is hard to see, but the whole thing is stitched in red thread, which is really cute when you see it close up.  This apron literally took me about half an hour to make, with the pocket being the most time consuming!  Easy.  Done.  I’m making a skirt out of the same material.  I’ll show you later.
My Re-purposed Skirt Apron
I had an awesome time creating this one!  I purchased this as a skirt in the thrift store.  I just loved the fabric and the shape of it.  I started cutting it up with only a vague notion of a plan.  Basically, I cut the back off the skirt (saving the zipper in case I can ever re-use it!) and hemmed the sides.  The top has a flap that folds under, so I decided not to make the waist straps meet in the front.  I made 2 straps out of some cream linen from my fabric box and stitched them down under that flap.  It gives it a very finished appearance on the back as well.  It was looking a little boring, so I went with a pocket again, this time I trimmed it with a piece of the waist tie that I had cut off the skirt.  It’s a little skinnier than most of my aprons, but the person I was making this for is thin, so I think it will work.

Cutting Pajama Pants from a Land’s End Flannel Sheet

OK, this is the last one I will show you tonight.  I am almost done with it, but I need to work on the waistband a little still.  I scored this awesome sheet at the thrift store last weekend.  It cost me $2.69.  It is a queen-size Land’s End flannel sheet and it is SO soft and cozy!  Currently, I’m making pajama pants for my little boy with it.  I am even putting in the pockets instead of just pretending they don’t exist like I usually do!  I’m actually even using a pattern here.  Kind of.  It was already cut out in a size 4 from a previous project.  He is a skinny little thing, so I knew the waist would fit fine, but it would be too short.  All I did was position the pattern an inch or so above the edge of the sheet and I cut the extra length.  By utilizing the hem on the fabric, I can also avoid hemming the pants because it is already done for me!

I have a ton of this fabric left, so I imagine it will find its way into more Christmas presents before it is all said and done.  In fact, don’t be surprised if you find out that I made pants for myself and stuck them under the tree!

As you can probably tell, I am having just a great time making inexpensive Christmas presents for everyone on my list.  Coming soon I’ll add up all the money I’ve spent on each person and see if I am still on track!
