I like to just sit in my swing and watch the chickens peck around. For some reason it is so peaceful and calming for me.
I love having the eggs also, but out of 16 chickens we have only gotten one egg in two days. I’m not sure what is going on. I don’t know if it is the time change or the molt or what? Very frustrating.
Yes! I should add a #11! Chickens are very relaxing to watch! Mine didn’t lay very well over the summer at all, but they are picking back up now and my daughter’s Ameraucanas are starting to lay. I think they just go through weird chicken phases to keep us guessing!
Our neighbors thought we were crazy because we would drag out the lawn chairs and just watch our chickens….that is until they got their first chickens. Now they see the wonder and fun we were having!
What can heat do to chickens. I had a flock and several of them died during the summer season. I checked their entire body to see if I could find a reason for the deaths. But every morning it would get up go check on them and one of them would just be laying on the ground dead. No blood no anything.
Great question! Overheating could definitely kill chickens. You will need to make sure they have plenty of shade and cool water. Our layers free range, so they find ways to cool off by wetting their feet in the pond or dust bathing, but when we had broilers in the summer, I would go out when I could and spray the roof of their coop with a hose to cool it off a little.
With all that being said, sometimes chickens just die and we never know the reason. 🙁

We lost our flock to predators and heat this summer. Two pullets roam about our yard. We’ll try again next year.
