One thing we get asked a lot is how in the world we ended up where we are, living this homestead life. Maybe this list will help answer some of your burning questions! So here are our top 10 reasons we moved to the country!
- 10. We wanted to get away from the pressures of suburban life.
- 9. We wanted to produce some of our own food and 2 4’x6′ gardens just weren’t cutting it.
- 8. We had a very tiny yard and we needed more space for our children to run around.
- 7. Chickens, if not actually banned, were at very least frowned upon in our neighborhood.
- 6. We didn’t have a good place to throw a party!
- 5. We are just way too junky to live in a subdivision. We always had crap everywhere! Eric fed the neighbors yummy BBQ. That is probably the only reason we didn’t get ugly letters. (Someone down the road from our little homestead has a toilet on the front porch, so obviously no one cares what you do out here!)
- 4. We needed room for Eric’s grill collection!
- 3. Our “temporary” move had lasted 10 years. It was past time.
- 2. Raw goat milk and homegrown tomatoes taste SO good!
- 1. All the cool people are doing it!

LOVE it! #5 and #2 are all too true! ๐ Well, and of course #1.
I love your list and have to add one of my own…
I can now sit on my porch in my pj’s and not worry about who is going to walk by and see me!
Ha! I’m not above milking the cow in my nightgown either! ๐
I read this to my fiancรฉe over the phone and she said we could have written that. Ha ha!!
We live in suburbia and have an 8 x 16 garden and neighbor’s whose pools we can look into. We put our dogs in a truck and drive them to a local farm museum where we let them offleash illegally so they can have a taste of the good life. (we pick up poop). Farmer Heather, we live vicariously thru you. Keep up the good work.
Andrea! I was just thinking about you! I’m glad you decided to comment! ๐
Hi Heather. I am 63yrs old and yearning for a simple life. I homesteaded yrs ago and almost achieved my goal of self sufficien
cy! (divorce!) Now I would like to try again. My present wife is willing!
I do realize that I have a tendency to look at things with young eyes and disregard my aging body! Please tell me if you know of anyone my age who is successfully homesteading!
I am fairly healthy, and thankfully, financialy able to attempt this! I just need some encouragement from someone! I am having one of those days! Thank you.

You can do it!! I know people of ALL ages who are homesteading successfully! Just add things slowly and back off if it’s too much! You don’t have to do all the things to homestead! Just do what you can and I’ll consider it a roaring success! Let me know if I can help!
