This is life with a dairy cow.
Sometimes the cow puts her foot in the bucket.
That is more than just a statement about what happened in the milk room this morning with my dairy cow. Yes, Beulah Belle, my dairy cow, did in fact, put her foot in my milk bucket when I was almost done milking. Yes, it ruined at least a gallon and a half of milk.
No, she didn’t mean to.
Yes, I got mad.
Then I got to thinking that her stomping in my bucket was a great metaphor about life.
Perhaps I needed to learn a lesson there. God really likes to teach me lessons in the strangest ways.
Sometimes things don’t go our way.
We get mad about it.
We blame it on someone else.
Sometimes we get stuck in this spot right here, but there is more to the story!!
My milk got ruined. I got mad. (For the record, despite what you’ve been told, it is perfectly acceptable to cry over spilled milk!)
Then I finished milking the cow into the bucket of ruined milk. I washed her udders, and I applied “bag balm” because, just like my hands, they were dry, and that’s what a loving owner would do for their dairy cow.
Then it was time to look on the bright side.
I realized that my chickens would love a bowl of nice warm milk on this frosty morning. My fig tree would like a drink too. Fig trees need a lot of calcium, so ruined milk is great for them.
What I am trying to say is, when things don’t go our way, it’s OK to get mad, but then you have to make the choice to look on the bright side. See what can be done to salvage the situation. Move on. There will be more milk tonight.
It’s called grace. We don’t deserve it, but our savior gives it freely, so I can at least try.
Have a blessed Sunday!

Great thoughts……… and life lessons………
So glad you could learn a lesson from this unfortunate experience! At least you found some good uses for the milk! Thanks for the life lesson 🙂

I love that. Usually when something like that happens its because we have maybe not been as careful as we should, or whatever the situation is. Yes, in most cases if we do stop and think about it we can turn most situations around. It is a choice we have, we can be grumpy all day and ruin a perfectly good day and probably a few other peoples too or as you did turn things around and make something good out of it. Good for you girl. Going to follow you

Ephesians 4:26 “Be wrathful, and yet do not sin,let the sun not set with you in a provoked state.”
I just found your blog while researching information about goats, and I have loved every minute of it. I am new to “homesteading”, and have chosen to embrace this way of life to hopefully show my 18 month old son a better way of life. That being said, I anxiously await the day I experience a cow putting her foot in the bucket. Hopefully my son will be with me when this happens… I can see it now, “Son, sometimes a cow just puts her foot in the milk, but we move on.” What a powerful sentiment to remind ourselves that life goes on.
Thanks for reading! Good luck with your homesteading adventure! Your son is a lucky boy!
