Happy New Year! I hope it was a great one for everyone who is reading this. Here at Green Eggs & Goats, we are very excited to find out what 2013 will hold (if a little worn out just reading our to-do lists!) I thought today that I would share with you some of our goals for this year.
Farm Goals 2013
- Sell our old house and apply that money towards our mortgage here.
- Start an orchard on the hill in our pasture. We would like to plant peaches, plums, apples, cherries, blueberries, figs and maybe some muscadines. The area will need to be fenced off from the rest of the pasture to keep the goats out.
- Work on our landscaping, trying to take out the bushes and other plants that we don’t like and replace them with edible landscaping as much as possible. Hint: expect to see kale. Lots of kale.
- Purchase a tiller or *possibly* a compact tractor in order to do our own plowing.
- Put the section of the pasture that we refer to as “the back triangle” to good use growing some sort of useful plants. I’m thinking maybe sunflowers, but I’m up for suggestions. This would also have to be fenced off to keep the goats out.
- Replace pool liner and remove crummy walkway that leads to the pool. The walkway has lots of rocks surrounding stepping stones, so not only does it look bad, we don’t walk on it if we are barefoot, because the rocks are always on the stones. It also blocks a section of the yard, making that little piece hard to mow.
- Implement fodder system for saving money on goat and chicken feed.
- Move toward raising mainly barred rock chickens, as these have been my favorite breed to work with so far. Great layers, great personalities, and we have had 2 successfully brood chicks this year, so I’m excited about the possibilities they offer!

I also want to look into growing fodder for the chickens.
Are you a fan of The Old Farts Farm on Facebook? They have a very cool diy system that I plan to model mine after! I bought the first round of materials last night!
Absolutely love reading the blog and keeping up with y’all. One of my resolutions is to visit old neighbors. We talk about y’all all the time!
Please, please, please come visit! We miss y’all!
Great goals! I love barred rocks, too! We are hoping to hatch out some of our chicken eggs for the first time this spring. 🙂
