I posted awhile back about how much I enjoyed growing sweet potatoes last year, and I believe I mentioned that I was trying to start my own sweet potato slips this year. Well, most of the potatoes rotted in their vases, but 2 of them have made it, and one in particular seems to be growing like mad!
The other one actually decided to sprout just when I was about to give up and toss it in the compost bucket!
So now for the confession . . . I have NO idea what to do with these slips now that I have sprouted them! I don’t think you just plant the whole thing, but I don’t know how to take the sprouts off without killing them! I suppose googling that is in my plan for the day, but any advice is appreciated!
P.S. I do have quite a few sweet potato slips in the ground that I bought at the garden shop, but they just come in little plastic containers like anything else you buy. I’m really excited to be able to plant some that I sprouted myself!
They are really pretty!
We have always had great success with sweet potatoes just cutting them up in large chunks, making sure each chunk has a sprouted eye and then planting the whole chunk. They are some of the easiest plants to grow and we have pictures of my boys when they were just little tikes digging up sweet potatoes in the garden. Last year we had such a huge sweet potato harvest that we still have leftovers!
