growing beans on a clothesline trellis

A Clothesline Bean Trellis!

I am just in love with our bean trellis for this year.  I’m always trying to find some way to reuse our old junk, and this one is really a winner.  We are in the process of selling our old house, and that means that we are finally getting around to cleaning out the basement at the old house.  This was the umbrella style clothesline *affiliate link* that Eric’s grandmother, Bonnie Jackson used to hang her clothes out to dry on.  It just seemed fitting to find a way to work it into our farm.

Now, I love being “green,” but I struggle with just getting laundry from the washer to the dryer, so I know that hanging it on the line and then retrieving it before it rains or an animal takes off with it, isn’t really my strong suit.  So I covered it with green instead!

This clothesline bean trellis is so cool and check out that purple garden! Too cool not to pin!

Installing a clothes dryer bean trellis:

  1. Drive a PVC pipe (found in the barn) into the center of the garden.
  2. Insert the clothes line into the pipe.
  3. Attach the corners of the line to the garden bed so it won’t spin.
  4. Plant pole beans.  Mine are Cosse Violetta Pole Beans, my favorite purple “green” bean.
  5. Hang twine from the line and let the beans climb up.
As a side note:  We learned the hard way last year that it is better to use a plastic twine, or even wire as the support for the beans.  Our bailing twine gave out on us last year before the beans were done producing, so make sure you use sturdy wire or strings for the beans to grow up!

Aren’t the blooms just beautiful?
We should expect our first beans to arrive in about 2 weeks!

So there you have it!  A super-simple, inexpensive way to re-purpose a piece of family history!

What about you?  Do you ever use “junk” to make your garden more interesting?  I would love to hear all about it!

  1. I’ll say you have a creative idea for a bean pole. I absolutely love it. You can pick the beans so much easier. I’d love to see this picture again when the beans are on it. Great idea. Thank you for sharing with the Clever Chicks Blog Hop this week; I hope you’ll join us again!
