I posted last week about the predator that was taking out our feathered friends. We had purchased a game camera, but so far, had only really gotten funny pictures, and learned that Beulah likes to get up and graze around 1 in the morning.
Well, last night, we got a lot more information on our game camera…
Basically, there’s a fox in the hen house.
That sneaky fox has been swiping my chickens!
At least we know what we’re up against now. I’m researching what type of livestock guardian animal will help protect our flock from foxes and other predators. I’m not sold on a guardian dog. Maybe a miniature donkey? They sound like easy keepers. I read that the smell of an alpaca will keep foxes away, although, people usually use llamas, not alpacas as guardian animals, so I’m not sure about the validity of that claim. Either way, Eric is never going to go for a llama or an alpaca in the back yard, so I suppose that one is out anyway!
I have also purchased a Nite Guard Predator Control Light, that should be here tomorrow. Until then, I’m all ears when it comes to suggestions on keeping predators at bay!
So, how do you keep your flock safe from foxes?
Wow! Good luck. I’m looking forward to learning how one deals with a fox.
Reading your posts makes me want a camera just to see what happens when I am asleep! We are inside city limits, so we don’t have trouble with foxes. House cats though, can mess with our hens. Their night time pen is like a Fort Knox against cats! During the day, they are loose with our dogs in the back yard so they can graze and chase bugs. ‘Amazing photos of the fox! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
