Baby Watch 2013

A watched pot never boils.

Similarly, a watched cow never calves.  I’m learning this one slowly but surely.
Poor Beulah has been showing signs for impending labor for days on end, but no baby yet.

She is dripping milk from her 2 back teats, showing mucus, and baby has “dropped.”  Now we play the waiting game.  I was just sure she would have it yesterday.  Now, who knows.  I think she is ready to just be done.  Poor thing.  My mama friends and I remember that feeling well!
I’ll keep you posted!

In other news, we do have baby guineas!  Louise went broody a few weeks ago.  We knew she was broody, because she disappeared, but was spotted every once in awhile.  I finally found her nest so we could keep an eye on her.  Anyway, yesterday she showed back up in the yard in company with about a dozen little brown fluffballs!  I have always read that guineas make bad mamas, and I was prepared to take them away from her, but they are being heavily guarded by both Mike and Louise guinea, and seem to be well taken care of for the time being.

Mike, Louise, and the things Savannah refers to as “Guinea Pigs”

Have a spectacular Friday!  I’m off to go watch the pot, um, I mean cow again!

  1. Good luck with Beulah! Sounds like she’s getting close. And I’m so glad you’ve got little keets – they are adorable! In my experience, guineas are good at being mamas for a little while, then they seem to leave the babies behind. So just watch them and make sure the parents are still tending to them in the future!
