Farm Updates

I’ve been out of town, and a little lax when it comes to posting updates on stories I have done, so here’s some updates to your burning questions.

First thing’s first.  No, Beulah has not had her calf.  Although I think her time is very soon, I’ve long since given up making predictions about it.  She was supposed to have been a few months bred when we got her, but because she hasn’t calved yet, that basically means that any calf we are expecting at this point will be the illegitimate offspring of the bull next door.  I wonder if he’ll pay calf support?

She looks miserable, doesn’t she?

So, the moral of this story is the same one that you learn by the time you have your third baby.  Everyone else thinks they are an expert when it comes to your child cow.  Ignore them.  You know your baby cow best.

Anyway, before we left for Ireland, Eric got her a fresh bale of hay, and she had a blast with it, so here is a little entertainment for you.  Notice that when she sees me taping, she’s all like “I’m cool.  Just having a snack.”

Next, about two days after I complained about only having one luffa on the vine, they popped up all over the place!  Apparently they just like to take their own sweet time, so hopefully we will have lots of luffa after all, although we got our first frost last night and I really hope it didn’t kill them…

What else is going on?  Let’s see . . . Oh, yes!  How could I forget?  The baby guineas have found their voices.  All 12 of them.  Huh?  What was that?  Can you speak up?  I can’t hear you over all this racket!  Pray for us.  No, make that pray for our neighbors!  Sorry for the noise!

OK, seriously, everything I read said that they were terrible parents and that I would need to take the keets after hatching because they would be neglected by the mama.  Well, not only were these protected by mama, daddy hovers over them too.  I literally would have been attacked if I had tried to get the babies.  They were very good parents.  The trouble is that I was only planning to keep a few of the keets.  I had promised keets to two different people.  Instead, I now have 14 guineas running around the yard!  At least we won’t have any trouble with ticks or company staying too long!

I think that’s it for now.  I’ll do another update post if I think of more things I left out!
