We were already not making much headway in the school department. We had spent our morning dressing up animals in Halloween costumes and carving our pumpkin and generally having Halloween fun.My plan was to take a quick shower, feed the goats and dairy cow, feed the kids, throw on our costumes and go take some chocolate candy to my granny in an assisted living place before karate class. We could do some of our reading in the car. Perfect.
Things, however, didn’t quite work out as planned.
I took the shower and we all headed down to feed. We had all the bowls prepared, but Beulah (our dairy cow) wasn’t at the fence, so I paused to look for her before hanging the goat bowls. I walked to peek around the other side of the barn, and I saw Beulah and a goat down by the pond. It was a black goat and she was licking it.
That’s no goat!!! I dropped the bucket I was carrying and took off into the pasture. Approaching with caution, since I didn’t know what Beulah’s demeanor would be like.
In the end, she didn’t mind me or the kids being nearby, and we were sure not to get between her and her baby calf. It was still brand new, wet, gooey and wobbly. AND SOOOOO CUTE!!
Guess what?!?
Hooray! It’s a girl!!!
It took a good bit of coaxing to get it to figure out nursing. I think she has the hang of it now though, but I’ll watch closely for a few days.
We are still working on the name, but I’ll be sure to let you know once it’s finalized. Also, I just might tell you the story of us trying to care for mama and baby last night before bed. Eric and Erica seemed to find that one funny. Me? Not so much…
So how was your Halloween? Did you do anything special? We only trick or treated at 2 houses, but this was one we are unlikely to soon forget!
Happily shared at The Homesteaders Hop!
