I don’t know about you, but winter is dry lip time for me. Chapped lips are pretty darn miserable in my book, so I have been working on making my own lip balm for some time. Since we began keeping bees here on the farm, I’ve been wanting to find projects for the extra wax (which I purify in this solar wax melter), and this one fits the bill very nicely!
I’ll be honest though, developing a DIY lip balm recipe wasn’t as easy as I expected! My first batch was utterly unusable, ick, gross, thrown in the trash. I’ve read tons of recipes and tutorials online, and I’ve finally arrived at 2 different recipes that have gotten a thumbs up from the family!
Feel free to mix and match the ingredients in these however you need to make a lip balm that YOU love, because, in the end, your opinion is the one that matters!
A word on lip balm containers…
I personally don’t love digging lip balm out of little pots with my finger, so I prefer to go to the trouble of using tubes. That being said, you are more than welcome to put your balm in whatever you like. I’ve seen everything from fancy oval tubes to re-purposed Altoid boxes, so really the sky is the limit! For me, I knew that I wanted to make a lot of lip balms, so I went ahead and ordered tubes, packaging, and a fancy tube holder from an online store conveniently named lipbalmtubes.com If I was just going to make a few tubes for myself or as a present, you can find some nice options on Amazon, or from the Mountain Rose Herbs website. (Those websites also sell all the other ingredients you need to make lips balms if you don’t happen to have them laying around your craft room!)

I hope you will enjoy making your own lip balms! If this project is something you personally don’t feel like you have time for, you could always run over to my Etsy store and grab some lip balms made with this same recipe there! Now, before you go, I need help deciding which flavor to make next! Will you please leave me a comment to tell me your favorite “flavor” of lip balm?

Thank you! I’ve been looking for a reliably good recipe for filling a small collection of vintage 70’s Avon lip balm containers I’ve collected for my dd to hopefully enjoy as much as I did. Also please let us know when your etsy shop is restocked as I’d love to try some of your beeswaxy goodness! xoxo
